“Astig” is slang for “Badass” in Tagalog (a Filipino dialect).

It’s a wordplay popularized in the Philippines in the 70s, when then-young generation would flip the words to create their own language (“ermats” as in mother, “erpats” father, etc). “Astig” is slang for “Tig-as”, literally “tough” or “hard”, and is still widely coined by Filipinos to describe something gutsy.

TJ & RG look at veganism as being “Astig”, and not as a weak approach to eating. Their blog, AstigVegan, looks to bravely break the stereotype that Filipino food cannot be vegan, healthy, and delicious all at the same time.

Champorado is a Filipino chocolate rice pudding that is cooked with white rice and cocoa powder, sweetened with sugar, and topped with milk. It also goes by Tsampurado or Champurado. However you refer it, Champorado is a simple snack that definitely hits the spot. it could be served warm or chilled. If you want, you could make a big batch and put it in the fridge to enjoy later.

Quick and Easy Banana Blossom Adobo

Quick and Easy Banana Blossom Adobo

adobong puso ng saging

wide puso saging

The thing about being the only vegan in the family (especially in a Filipino family), is that you find yourself in family parties and get togethers where the vegan selections are slim, uninspired, or nowhere to be found.

On one special occasion, my family and I got together and ate at a Filipino restaurant called Isla,in Newark Ca. Although I was pretty bummed out about the selections, I didn’t…

REAL FOOD DAILY

516 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica CA

Real Food Daily was our first stop on our vegan LA food trip so you could just imagine how excited my friends and I were, especially after hours of long driving. It’s not really in LA, it’s in Santa Monica, but still close enough of a drive.  The verdict? I have to say, Real Food Daily did not only disappoint, it wowed us.

My friend Rosie…

vegan potluck collage

My friends and I love to get creative with our vegan potlucks. Sure, vegan is already a theme, but why stop there? It’s fun to challenge yourself and see what kind of yummy dishes you could share to your friends. Besides, almost all kinds of recipes could be found online now. If they’re not online, you still have your imagination.

Here are the potluck themes we’ve done so far. I hope this list…

Scenes from Savor Filipino Food Demo, Plus Kare Kare Video

food demo2

Here are some highlights and my favorite moments from my first (live!) food demo at an event called Savor Filipino, a Filipino Food festival in San Francisco.

Thanks to my friends who snapped these photos. My mind was preoccupied on the demo that I didn’t get a chance to take any photos at all. And to think I was planning on doing a vlog on location!

Here’s my set up. A nice demo table with…

I would love to invite you to a Filipino Food Event called “Savor Filipino“, where I’ll be teaching how to make Vegan Kare Kare, a Filipino stew that tastes savory and delectable with various vegetables, seasoned with toasted peanuts, toasted rice, onions, garlic, and many more.

After the demo, guests will have a taste of it with my vegan Bagoong, a salty, umami condiment. The photo above is a…

Part 1: Vegan Finds: Donut Friend and Crossroads, Los Angeles

Part 1: Vegan Finds: Donut Friend and Crossroads, Los Angeles

Lately, Los Angeles has been kicking butt producing vegan and vegan-friendly establishments. Not to mention, most of these places are organic and macrobiotic. I’m not usually a big fan of trends but this healthy vegan trend is something that I hope will never go away.

My friends, Rosie and Jen, and I drove down to Los Angeles and its neighboring cities to explore and check out these vegan places…

Video Recipe: Vegan Filipino Menudo

Video Recipe: Vegan Filipino Menudo

I’ve featured few versions of vegan Filipino Menudorecipes on this this blog-and I’m going to add yet another version that I hope you could try. This time, I’m featuring two ingredients that would create the pork flavor and texture without the pork. No, it’s not just adding a fake pork product in the mix. You could, by all means. But I’m a strong advocate of whole foods especially in cooking.…
